Sue Hewton-Water, Medium - Calgary, Canada


Joan Macartney has lengthy experience in dressage having trained, competed and judged for a number of years. She is a Senior Dressage Judge (FEI4*R) both with Equestrian Canada and US Equestrian where she judges throughout Canada, the United States, Central America and Australia.

A highlight of Joan’s background has been her international work which involves travelling and judging in a variety of countries – South/Central America, South Africa, Eastern Europe, New Zealand are a few areas where she has judged and presented clinics. Working with youth and assisting in their development is always a priority.

Having retired from a lengthy career in post-secondary education, Joan has become increasingly involved with the dressage community. She is currently a member of the Dressage Committee.  A highlight has been presenting education clinics to officials.

Joan looks forward to returning to Kamloops in 2021.


Sue Hewton-Water, Medium - Calgary, Canada

Sue is a certified EC Dressage Judge, Medium Status, and judges extensively throughout Western Canada at both recognized dressage shows and horse trials.

Sue is also a current Equine Canada Coach (Competition Coach Specialist) having achieved her certification in 1994. She began riding in England as a child and was an active member of the British

Pony Club. She gained valuable experience working at breeding farms and riding schools in the U.K. prior

to moving to Canada in the mid-1970’s, where she continued to ride and compete.

Although her riding background was initially in Combined Training, Sue has spent the past twenty years

focusing almost exclusively on dressage. She coaches at a number of barns in the Calgary area and also

teaches clinics in both Alberta and B.C. She currently owns two horses and is an active competitor whenever her busy schedule allows.

Sue lives in Calgary with her husband and two dogs, Lucy and Rosie. She has two grown-up children, also pursuing their dreams!

Ali Buchanan, Senior - BC, Canada

Janet Foy, FEI 5* Judge, USEF "S"  - Colorado, US

Janet’s interest in dressage started when she lived in Oxford, England, and she passed several British Horse Society Instructor Exams.  She is currently an FEI 5* judge, USEF “S” Dressage Judge and an USEF Sport horse “R” Breeding Judge. She also serves as an FEI Technical Delegate.  

 She has judged throughout Europe, Asia and Central America.  The FEI appointed her to judge the 2010 Central American Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico and the first European Under-25 Grand Prix Championships in Germany in 2016 as well as the World Cup in 2018.

She served as the FEI Technical Delegate at the 2013 Central American Games in Costa Rica.

As a rider and trainer, Janet has won her USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals and gives clinics throughout the United States.  Her students have also won many Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals.

She writes articles for various horse magazines and was involved in producing and writing the scripts as well as doing the voice overs for several USDF judges training videos and USDF On The Levels. 

 She has written two best selling books: “Training the not so Perfect Dressage Horse”  and “Dressage Solutions” both published by Trafalgar Press.

 She has served on the Board of the USDF, AHSA, USEF as well as serving on the current USEF Dressage Sports Committee.

Gabriel Armando, FEI 4* Judge  - New Jersey, US

Gabriel is an  4* FEI judge (as well as a mentor FEI Judge) who has been involved in the equestrian sport since he was 8 years old. As a young rider, he competed in dressage and jumping. In 1982 and 1983, he was  Dressage National Champion in his native country, Argentina. In 1998, he won the Silver Medal in the South American Championship, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has been a member of the Argentinean team in the 2003 Pan American Games in Dominican Republic and in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio, Brazil. He  has trained in Germany where he goes periodically since 1986.


He has judged in 20 countries in International competitions including the NAJYRC (2006-2010-2011-2012-2014-2015), World Dressage Challenge (Region 9 and 2), Panam Games 2011 and  many World Cup Qualifiers.

As a trainer, he is an active clinician and he daily supervises the development of  20 riders/horses. Gabriel has students from various countries. He has also been the National Trainer and Technical advisor of the Puerto Rican Dressage Team as well as trainer of his native country dressage team. He is based at Diamond Creek Farm in Ringoes, New Jersey where he trains with his wife Suzanne Ross-Armando. Together they have helped many US riders to obtain their bronze, silver and gold medals from the USDF. They spend winters in Wellington, Florida. 


Doreen Horsey, USEF 'S' Judge  - Calgary, Alberta 

Doreen is an Equine Canada Senior Dressage judge , a licensed USEF “S” judge and licensed USEF “R” Western Dressage judge.Her judging assignments take her across Canada and throughout the US.She was actively involved with Dressage Canada as a member of Equine Canada’s Official’s Committee


Personnel riding accomplishments include Provincial and National awards andchampionships from  Basic through Grand Prix. She was long listed in 1989 & 1990.

Having trained and competed from basic through Grand Prix, she is cognizant of the time and expense involved in developing a competition horse at any level.

Doreen lives in Calgary Alberta.

Marian Cunningham, FEI 4*, USEF "S"  -  Virginia, US

As a rider, represented Peru in 1983 Pan American Games and 1984 Olympic Games, having trained in Germany with George Theodorescu and competed in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Italy.

As a judge, became FEI “C” in 1996 and “I” in 2004. Judged in Europe, Australia, Central and South America, the Caribbean, as well as Canada and the US. Also licensed by the USEF as an “S” judge. Currently living in Virginia on a farm with horses, dogs and cats.

Shelia Skene, Senior, Victoria, BC

Sheila Skene is an Equine Canada Senior dressage and a licensed USEF ‘S’ dressage judge. She is also an Equine Canada Senior Para Equestrian judge. A lifelong equestrian who grew up riding in the westcountry of England, continuing to actively ride and compete after emigrating to Canada. Her interest in dressage developed in the 1980’s quickly becoming her obsession as she successfully trained and competed her own horses up to and including Intermediare 1. In her training journey, Sheila was guided by many well respected clinicians including, Inez Propfe Credo; Capt.John Kenyeres; Dietrich Von Hopfgarten; Leslie Reid; Bonnie Bonnello, Joy Longley, Dale Irwin and Stephen Clarke, from whom she has taken inspiration in her dressage aspirations.

 Believing that volunteering is a vital element in any sport, Sheila has consistently been involved in the administration of dressage, locally through Cadora by organizing clinics, competitions and fundraising for special projects and through Dressage Canada where until recently she was Chair of the Dressage Canada Rules Committee. Currently Sheila is a member of the newly formed Dressage Canada Committee.

 In her working life, after a few years in the equine industry, Sheila made the choice to find a career to support her passion for horses, enjoying a long and varied career in the Personal Trust industry with Royal Trust and more recently with a prominent Victoria, BC law firm. Now retired, there is more time to take on judging assignments, volunteer within the sport, and travel with husband Mike to see all the special places they have long wished to visit.
